Barbuda’s much-loved Caribana Festival is in full swing, bringing five days of music, pageantry, food, sport and community celebration to the island.
Held this year under the theme “Culture and a Rhythmic Shift”, Caribana 2026 opened on Thursday 21st May with a parade to Caribana City, followed by an official opening ceremony, live performances and Kids Fest. The celebrations continue until Monday 25th May, with a packed programme reflecting the spirit, creativity and cultural pride of Barbuda.
Among the early highlights was the Junior Calypso Monarch competition, where reigning winner Singing Samantha successfully retained her title. Big Progress placed second, while Young General took third. Former winners of the Miss Big and Bold Queen Competition were also honoured during the opening ceremony, adding a note of recognition and continuity to the festivities.
Caribana is one of Barbuda’s signature cultural events, traditionally bringing together residents, returning nationals and visitors for a lively celebration of Caribbean music, costume, food and island life. The festival blends the familiar energy of carnival with Barbuda’s own close-knit character, creating an atmosphere that is both festive and deeply rooted in community.
The weekend programme includes the Johnny D’Souza Fishing Tournament, the Spirits and Sons Seafood Fest, Caribana Colours, the Caribana Tabanca breakfast fete and the Classic Caribana Horse Racing. The celebrations will close on Monday with J’ouvert in the early morning and Last Lap in the evening.
With strong turnout reported during the opening events, Caribana 2026 is once again showing why Barbuda’s cultural calendar remains such an important part of the twin islands’ identity and appeal.
