Two of Antigua & Barbuda’s newest citizens bring together innovation, entrepreneurship and holistic health. Tobias, nicknamed “The Professor” for his lifelong study of human potential, is an inventor and entrepreneur. Maggie, known as “The Health Detective,” is a trained naturopath and medical navigation specialist. Together, they combine a passion for technology, wellbeing and lifelong learning. The Citizen caught up with them to learn what drew them to the twin islands and how they hope to contribute to the local community.
Your backgrounds blend technology and holistic health. How did those two worlds come together?
Tobias: I’ve been fascinated by technology since childhood. I was among the first in my generation to carry a mobile phone, worked as a software tester for IBM while still at school, and ran an online bulletin board system long before the internet became mainstream. I was also always interested in health. Having experienced health challenges as a child, I often wondered how we could look after ourselves without always relying on conventional interventions. When I met my wife, our shared curiosity aligned perfectly.
Maggie: We grew up in small villages in Germany and, while we valued that stability, we were also adventurous. When we moved to a remote Pacific island, we discovered how much we loved island life. That inspired me to study natural health and earn my first naturopathy qualification.
Tobias: After catching dengue in Asia, Maggie adjusted remedies every hour or two. Within 48 hours, I was almost back on my feet. That experience really solidified our belief in the power of targeted, personalised and holistic health management.
Did Antigua & Barbuda live up to your expectations?
Today, the idea of “home” is increasingly a lifestyle choice rather than simply the place where you were born. Antigua & Barbuda immediately felt right to us. The combination of sunshine, sea and a relaxed atmosphere creates an environment where people can genuinely thrive. Within days of arriving, we felt healthier, more energised and more connected to nature.
What aspects of Antigua aligned with the life you wanted to create?
One of the island’s greatest strengths is convenience. Within minutes, you can go from a beautiful beach or resort to a cutting-edge medical facility. This aligns perfectly with how we want to spend our time. At the same time, the island’s geography provides a sense of calm and focus that’s becoming increasingly difficult to come by.
How important was the lifestyle balance Antigua & Barbuda offers?
We prefer to think in terms of harmony rather than balance. Harmony allows work, family, wellbeing and ambition to support one another instead of competing for attention. Antigua naturally encourages that. Whether you are pursuing a business project, spending time with loved ones or simply recharging, the environment helps you focus on what matters most.
Maggie, how do you hope to integrate your expertise in holistic health with the local community?
Antigua already has many strengths as a wellness destination, but I believe there is room to expand access to holistic approaches and preventative health education. I would love to bring elements of my clinic’s methodology to the island’s through partnerships, training and community initiatives. I am also excited to learn from traditional Caribbean bush medicine and local health knowledge.
Tobias, what kind of entrepreneurial ecosystem do you envision growing?
Throughout my career, I’ve seen that places with fewer traditional corporate pathways often have tremendous entrepreneurial potential. When young people are encouraged to experiment, build ideas and learn from failure, remarkable things can happen.
I have previously worked with initiatives such as Startup Weekend, where participants form teams, validate ideas and present them to investors in just a few days. Antigua would be an excellent place for similar programmes, helping both aspiring and experienced entrepreneurs discover new opportunities and develop valuable skills.
Long term, I would love to help create a global centre for polymathy and lifelong learning by bringing together knowledge, innovation and diverse perspectives from around the world. Antigua is uniquely positioned to connect local talent with international networks, investment and expertise.
Do you have any favourite places on the island?
The 365 beaches approach was a great start for us, and we are on a mission to explore them all! Runaway Beach is probably our favourite. We were also pleasantly surprised by Bay Gardens Village. Every time we visit, we end up making new friends. It’s an unexpected networking hub set among the island’s lush greenery, providing a fantastic social contrast to quiet days on the sand. Our favourite place right now is probably the secluded remoteness of Prickly Pear Island.
What would you say to someone considering Antigua & Barbuda citizenship?
Go there, enjoy the land, and get to know the people. It is very easy to fall in love with the place. Most importantly, don’t just bring your capital; bring your heart, talents, experience and your global network. If you come with the intention of contributing, you will be welcomed with open minds. Who knows? Maybe we will even run into each other by sheer serendipity on one of those 365 beaches for an inspiring conversation! •
