A new Commonwealth conservation initiative backed by US$202.2 million in pledges has been launched in Antigua & Barbuda, with the Eastern Caribbean among its initial areas of focus.
The Commonwealth Nature Initiative was unveiled on 2nd November during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, aboard Fortescue’s Green Pioneer. It supports the global target of protecting at least 30 percent of the world’s land and oceans by 2030, known as “30×30”.
Developed by the Government of Antigua & Barbuda alongside the Commonwealth Secretariat and conservation partners, the initiative brings together governments, philanthropic organisations and communities to help establish, expand and strengthen protected areas. It aims to attract a further US$1 billion from donor countries and philanthropic sources by 2030.
In the Eastern Caribbean, its initial focus includes supporting the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States’ 30×30 Transformation Programme. Other priorities include securing sustainable financing for protected areas in Africa and marine and coastal conservation across the Pacific.
Founding supporters include the Minderoo Foundation, Rob Walton Foundation, Rainforest Trust, Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, Waitt Foundation and National Geographic Pristine Seas. Following the launch, King Charles III joined attendees and supporters for a reception aboard the vessel.
For Antigua & Barbuda, which helped develop the initiative and hosted its launch, the announcement places conservation firmly within its Commonwealth agenda, connecting the protection of nature with climate resilience, livelihoods and long-term prosperity.
