Hind Lahrichi, a Moroccan-born entrepreneur, and her husband are two of Antigua & Barbuda’s newest citizens. Currently the owner of Sora Fisheries, in 2020, Hind embarked on a daring adventure when she and her husband-to-be crossed the Atlantic on their catamaran to reach the Caribbean. Upon arriving in Antigua, Hind instantly fell in love with the island and its lifestyle. The Citizen caught up with her during her recent extended stay in the twin islands to delve into her journey towards becoming a citizen of Antigua & Barbuda.
Can you please tell us a bit about your interesting life?
After graduating from business school in Morocco, I worked in a fishing company, which sparked my interest in this sector. However, my path to becoming a shipowner was far from linear. Prior to this, I was involved with many different things, like establishing an insurance firm, exporting agricultural goods, pioneering the installation of billboards in Moroccan airports, introducing the first barcode machines in supermarkets and venturing into the hospitality and real estate industries, among others. Yet, amidst all these ventures, I always dreamed about sailing the Atlantic and exploring the Caribbean.

You eventually fulfilled your dream. How did you end up in Antigua?
I crossed the Atlantic with my customised Sunreef 50 catamaran. When I set sail, I was fully aware of the risks involved and didn’t know whether I would see my children again. Nevertheless, I was determined to pursue this dream. Throughout the crossing, we encountered various hardships, including challenging weather conditions, which we managed to overcome. However, it was undoubtedly the greatest adventure of my life. We departed from Agadir in Morocco and arrived in St Lucia 18 days later. We then travelled through the Caribbean until we reached Antigua.
What were your first impressions upon arrival?
Arriving in English Harbour, I was taken aback by its beauty. As I discovered more about the marina, I became even more impressed by the reception, the services provided, the efficient administration, the kind-hearted people and its charming surroundings. I fall in love with Antigua a little more each day. The more of it I discover, the stronger my attachment becomes.
Why did you decide to become a citizen of the twin islands?
Initially, I fell in love with the island for its beauty and the kindness and warmth of its people. But then I began to feel at home, and I believe that when you feel comfortable somewhere, you should stay. I could envision myself preparing a painting exhibition here, as I am also a painter, and having a house and investments here.
Can you tell us about the process of donating to the National Development Fund to apply for citizenship?
I chose this route because I found it logical, feasible and efficient. I was also happy to contribute, even in a small way, to the development of this island. Antigua deserves to be the shining star of the Caribbean!
How long have you been in Antigua?
In French, we say, “When we love, we don’t count.” Initially, I came for a week, but I extended my stay to over a month, and now I don’t want to leave. I feel like I’m at home!

What would you tell potential new citizens concerned about fitting in here?
In my experience, anyone can fit in here; there is absolutely no racism. I once attended a Sunday church service, and despite being Muslim, everyone made me feel completely at home. I am grateful to everyone for the warm welcome we received in the house of God.
Where is your favourite spot on the island?
Every place has its own charm and energy. At first, I wanted to live in English Harbour, but after seeing Blue Waters, I wanted to stay there. And then, after discovering Hodges Bay, I loved it there too! It’s not easy to choose just one place in Antigua.
What would you tell someone considering Antiguan citizenship?
Antigua has something for everyone. Writers can find inspiration to write their best novels on this island, given its rich history and open people.
